Thank you for your patience and fortitude as building works progress. The final phase of works is beginning in the front range and the Outer Library, and we have taken the decision to work on these areas simultaneously, in order to maintain the project timeline, with works completing before Christmas. Over this period the front door will not be in use.

From Tuesday July 2nd, our main entrance will be via our back gate at the end of Chapel Street.

Key information:

  • Chapel Street is accessible via the Princesshay shopping centre. Route 1 (step access) adjacent to the former Cafe Rouge and Route 2 (step-free access) under the archway, adjacent to the Leftfield / Neal’s Yard shop (photos below).
  • Turn right on Chapel Street and the Institution’s entrance will be via the double black gate at the far end of the street and will be clearly signed.
  • Members and visitors will enter the building through the garden and via the back garden door.
  • The signing in desk will be in the Courtenay Room.
  • The Courtenay Room will also be used for tea and coffee (and lunches in due course).
  • The lavatory will be in the former laundry room, adjacent to the garden.
  • Newspapers and periodicals will be found in the Inner Library.
  • The library desk, research desks and armchairs will all be found in the Inner Library.
  • We will be open as usual with all our usual services running and collections fully accessible via our appointment system.
  • We will review the best route into the building again in September.
