Picturing the skull

In this session we will be drawing from the animal skull collection, exploring ways of capturing tone and texture in charcoal, pencil, and pen. All materials will be provided.

Make your own mutant monster with recycled materials and incomplete toys.    Some materials will be provided but please bring any old toys and or any other recycled objects you may have and want to include in your monster creation.

Make the library your own with this diorama workshop.  Using source copies of the collection see where your imagination takes you to create a library of your dreams.
Some materials will be provided but please bring along a cardboard box or shoe box for reusing in this craft.

Bookworms – Seaweed Jewellery

Children 5+ /  Junior Members Club* / 8 places per workshop / Booking essential

Did you know that the Victorians used seaweed for decoration and food, and many specimens were collected by female enthusiasts of natural history? In this session we will be learning about the hidden histories of seaweed collecting and making some seaweed-inspired decorative wear of our own!

* Junior Membership is available to anyone aged under 18 and is currently £12 per year.     Bookworms is a monthly club for our youngest members, and suitable for children aged 5-8 years old.    Bookworms get an annual activity pack and priority access to children’s events at the DEI.

Christmas market themed fundraiser   – details to follow

Deck the Halls * 

3pm- 5pm

Volunteers and Members are invited to help up decorate the DEI and dress the tree, in preparation for the Christmas season.

Enjoy some carols, mulled wine and mince pies in the Courtenay Room.

*This event is open to Members only, drop in, no need to book 

 

Saturday 4 December

To coincide with the Christmas Market, we are offering free Christmas guided tours- pop in to find out more about the institution and its history.

1pm-4pm, drop-in, no need to book.

Our Christmas cards will also be available for purchase, and there will be an opportunity to leave a wish on our Christmas tree.

Bookworms – Memory Boxes

Children 5+ /  Junior Members Club* / 8 places per workshop / Booking essential

The pandemic has provided a time of changes and adjustment for many of us, as well as a period for pause and reflection for others. This session invites you to reflect upon a recent or historic memory in poetry and in craft.

* Junior Membership is available to anyone aged under 18 and is currently £12 per year.     Bookworms is a monthly club for our youngest members, and suitable for children aged 5-8 years old.    Bookworms get an annual activity pack and priority access to children’s events at the DEI.

 

 

We continue to observe enhanced hygiene procedures and maintain social distancing, where possible.  

Children under 11 are exempt from wearing a mask.   

We request that marks be worn by those over 11, unless the event is taking place out of doors.

Indoor events will take place upstairs in the Upper Reading Room and rooms will be ventilated as much as possible.
