New table-top book display – Whispers of the West: Tracing the Folklore of the South West

Visit our Outer Library in March and April to see our new table-top display, curated by Evie Bensley, third year English Literature student at the University of Exeter.
“This year, the university has introduced a new form of dissertation, Dissertation by Collaborative Project, which allows students to work on a communication project in partnership with an external organisation. I was thrilled to collaborate with the Devon and Exeter Institution, because of its rich literary collections and connections to the region’s history. The support and warmth from everyone at the Institution have made this project exciting and interesting.
My project focuses on uncovering the folklore of the South West, delving into tales of pixies, witches, and enchanted landscapes to showcase how storytelling has shaped the cultural memory of Devon and Cornwall. I have been particularly intrigued by women’s voices, whose contributions are essential to preserving these legends, and the region’s deep connection to its natural environment. Drawing from the South West Heritage collection in particular, brimming with delightful folklore and social history, I have discovered countless stories planted in the landscape. As part of this project, I am curating a book display, an accompanying blog post, and presenting a guided tour of the display in April. I hope to invite members to rediscover the magic and mystery of the land around us.”
Evie will be on hand to talk to visitors about her display as part our free Wednesday afternoon tours, on Wednesday 26th March. Drop in any time between 1pm and 4pm.
