The Devon and Exeter Institution is a subscription library founded in 1813 and is a very special environment for  events, lectures, performances and tours.

The library holds 35,000 volumes and many thousands of maps, prints, pamphlets, cuttings and leaflets. The library is deemed of national importance as an intact collection in its original setting.

To ensure that its unique and vulnerable nature is protected we we welcome booking requests from individual members, non-members and organisations which match our charitable objectives.

DEI Conditions of hire

Our current schedule of charges are:

Reading Room half day  – £60  (Seats 10-12 Boardroom style, 20 cafe style / upstairs / view of the Cathedral)

Reading Room full day   – £95  (Seats 10-12 Boardroom style, 20 cafe style / upstairs / view of the Cathedral)

Stirling Room half day   – £40 Mon and Tues only (Working studio space, seats 6 Boardroom style / upstairs / view of the Cathedral)

Stirling Room full day    – £75 Mon and Tues only (Working studio space, seats 6 Boardroom style / upstairs / view of the Cathedral)

Outer Library evening     – £120  (Seats 40 lecture style / up to 50 standing / ground floor)

Outer Library full day   –  £240 Sunday only  (Seats 40 lecture style / up to 50 standing / ground floor)

Kitchen  – £30

Out of hours charge –  £20.00

Wine glass hire  – £25

China/ cutlery hire –  £25

PP projector & screen –  £15

Coffee/teas per person –  £2

Group tours (15 people maximum)  – £3 per head
